True Story of Smoky the War Dog
From a lucky chance discovery at the bottom of an abandoned fox hole in Papua New Guinea during WWII, to becoming a famous entertainer, a decorated war hero, and the world’s first official Therapy Dog of record, this story is nothing short of amazing. After being rescued in the jungle this dog went on to be named the number one mascot in the South Pacific, she earned eight battle stars and many medals for her bravery and for the lives she saved, and she was the dog that inspired the creation of today’s therapy dog programs. This story is one that will have you on the edge of your seat and will put love in your heart and maybe a tear of joy in your eye.

She was owned and trained by Corporal Bill Wynne and was his companion and partner during and after the war. She traveled half the world with Bill and brought joy and comfort to untold thousands of sick and injured and entertained millions on television and in theaters. In Bill’s book about their adventures he recounts this incredible tale and shares heartwarming stories that speak of heroism and tug on the heartstrings. Their story has since inspired monuments to be built to this brave dog both in the U.S. and Australia and has had many articles written about them, and they were even featured on Travel Channel’s Monumental Mysteries television show.

The story of Bill’s “Angel In A Foxhole” is one that is inspirational, emotional, and a great tribute to our veterans, including all dogs of war. Now professional public speaker and skilled story teller Adrian Brigham, along with his wife, recording artist Denise Brigham and her therapy dog “Hairy Pawter”, are bringing it to libraries, schools, veterans organizations, pet events and other groups so that they too can learn that all dogs have possibilities, and that our heroes and veterans can also have four paws, a tail and wet noses. The presentation is complete with vintage photos and posters, and where possible it even includes videos of Bill and his beloved furry hero. World renowned sculptor Susan Bahary has even lent one of the official Smoky statues of which there are only 19 in the world and valued at $10,000 each.
