Author Anna Marie Tomczyk will discuss "We Are Eagles", a new book about immigrant women in Aurora whose lives were changed with the help of the local Dominican Literacy Center.
Join us for an enlightening discussion of a book about Aurora's own Dominican Literacy Center and how the staff there helped immigrant women by teaching them to speak, read, and write in English. The book is "We are eagles: Inspiring Stories of Immigrant Women Who Took Bold Steps in Life Through Literacy" by Anna Marie Kukec Tomczyk. The five women profiled in "We Are Eagles" are among the inspiring immigrants who left behind poverty and gained confidence and strength as they learned about life through a new language at the Dominican Literacy Center. The lives of these women took shape during the first 25 years of the center as they reached milestones that many others took for granted. They also saw their children grow without the fear of poverty or hunger and become the first generation in their families to graduate high school and college. The center, which started inside the church basement of St. Nicholas Church, has since expanded to a large building and then spun off a second center. Today, the Dominican Literacy Center is a bustling learning community that has taught American English to thousands of immigrants, as well as helping many prepare to become U.S. citizens.
