Young Authors Short Story Contest 

Aspiring young writers in grades 3 - 8 are invited to submit a short story to be judged on creativity, style, and voice!

Rules for Entry:

  • Anyone living in the library's service area may enter.

  • Story must be no more than 1500 words and written in English.

  • Only one story may be submitted per person.

  • All stories must be original, free of copyright restrictions, and previously unpublished.

  • Story content should be appropriate for a wide audience and suitable for all ages.

  • Each story must be accompanied by an entry form.

  • Stories must be typed and include the story title and page numbers on each page.

    • Do not include your name on any of the story pages, only the entry form.

  • Writers can submit a hard copy in person to any APLD Children's Reference Desk.

    • Hard copy entries will not be returned.

  • Entries that do not meet the above guidelines may be disqualified from judging.

  • Submission Deadline is November 30, 2022.

    • No late entries will be accepted.

  • Winners announced Friday, December 16, 2022.

Judging & Prizes:

  • Entries will be accepted November 1-30, 2022

  • Two age groups will be judged

    • Grades 3 - 5

    • Grades 6 - 8

  • Stories will be judged on creativity, style, and voice.

  • Winners will be announced Friday, December 16, 2022.

  • Winners will receive a bag of fun prizes!

  • Winning stories will be published on our website.

Aurora Public Library District reserves the right to deny entry to any submission deemed inappropriate due to the use of derogatory language or use of copyrighted materials. Stories must adhere to the Exhibit and Display Policy. Upon submission, entrants grant Aurora Public Library District all rights to the work and consents that all stories may be displayed and/or reproduced without limitation and without compensation.
