Aurora Public Library is hosting its first Homeschool Science Fair event for students in grades 3-8. Homeschool students are invited to present a science project to other families and a panel of local science buffs. This event will help students learn the processes of research, experimentation, design, all while learning about science. Registration is required.

Guidelines:

  • Students must select a science fair topic of interest for their project. A good science fair project idea is one that asks a clear scientific question that can be answered through experimentation or identifies a problem that can be solved using engineering. Note: Projects that include smoke or fire are prohibited due to public hazard and smoke detectors.
  • Students must follow the scientific method or the engineering design process for their project. Science Buddies has excellent resources to help you get started with your project with online tools such as a topic selection wizard, information on organizing your display board, and helpful tips.
  • All research, experiments, and data collection must be complete prior to the date of the fair.
  • Create a display board and/or presentation detailing process, showing data, and presenting conclusions.
  • A table space will be provided for each participant and their display board.
  • There will be no formal judging but the science fair will be open to the public and family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend.
  • There will be pictures taken during the Homeschool Science Fair by library staff. Please inform library staff if you do not want your picture taken.

Science Fair Rules
1. Adults may help gather materials, supervise experiments, and build displays. We do encourage allowing the students to do as much of their own work as possible in order to promote the learning process. Note: The student should be the only one giving presentations.
2. Displays must be on stand-alone poster boards or display boards (maximum size: 36" tall by 48" wide).
3. Presentations should be less than 3 minutes. This will allow time to hear from all our students and for folks to ask a few questions.
4. All projects and experiments need to be safe for you and the library.
5. Presentations (under 3 minutes!) must include a summary of your process and findings, and may can include simple demonstrations.
