In 2015, the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling that required states to recognize same-sex marriages. Learn about what led to that ruling, and what's happened since, with author John Demilio.

In this presentation, retired professor and author John Demilio will teach you about the history of LGBTQ Activism from 1950 to today.

John D'Emilio is professor emeritus of History and Gender and Women's Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago. He's authored, co-authored, and edited numerous books about the LGBTQ movement since the 1980s. In 1997, he co-authored the book "Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America", which was cited in the landmark Supreme Court case Lawrence v. Texas, which found sodomy laws to be unconstitutional. His most recent book, "Memories of a Gay Catholic Boyhood: Coming of Age in the Sixties", was published in 2022.
