Fashion with Purpose Workshop

Build a fashion piece out of craft supplies and upcycled materials with costume designer, seamstress, and drag performer Jakki Love. All materials will be provided, all skills levels are welcome.

In this fun and educational activity, participants will learn social cooperative skills, the basics of clothing design, and how to exercise their creativity. Participants will also learn about the Let Freedom Read Dress that is being exhibited at Waubonsee Community College during October. Participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from learning about this dress and to go see it in person! 

Registration will open at 9 a.m. on Monday, September 28. Grades 6 - 12.
 
Facilitator Jakki Love is a costume designer, seamstress, and a stunning diva with iconic makeup from the northwest suburbs. Jakki's drag performances are focused on love, positivity, and happiness, "because we all need a little love in our lives". This program is intended to align with both LGBTQ+ History Month and the celebration of The USA's Semiquincentennial (America's 250th Anniversary!). The inspiration for this event was the traveling exhibit of the Let Freedom Read Dress, a dress which was designed to symbolize the entwinement of American and Queer history, as well as to highlight the importance of protecting the freedom to read. The dress is based on colonial styles from America's history, and features the titles of 13 books which were identified as the most commonly challenged books in the USA according to the American Library Association in 2022. The dress was designed and famously modeled by LGBTQ+ Americans.
