El Distrito de Bibliotecas Publicas de Aurora tiene el gusto de presentar la película en español “Camazotz”.

Camazotz nos cuenta la historia del dios murciélago de Mesoamérica quien ha vivido sin documentos por un año en Chicago. En esta ciudad conoce a una antropóloga de la Biblioteca Newberry, a un inmigrante que trabaja de cocinero en el downtown y a una jovencita méxico-americana que vive en los suburbios. Durante su estancia en Chicago, Camazotz es testigo de la violencia urbana. Ya que hay demasiada sangre derramada en la ciudad, no tiene que chupar el líquido vital; más bien limpia las heridas de las víctimas. Se descubre que Camazotz tiene propiedades curativas. Todos los que interactúan con Camazotz se sienten impactados por la fuerza de este dios. En cierto momento Camazotz es arrestado y deportado, pero nunca llega a la frontera. Más bien escapa y se dirige a un pueblo de Arkansas para laborar en una planta empacadora de pollos. En la película vemos el periodista Roberto Rizzo entrevistando a las tres personas que conocieron a Camazotz.

 Camazotz nos lleva a reflexionar sobre la violencia en la ciudad y dentro de nosotros mismos así como en la necesidad de sanarse. Camazotz no está limitado a una identidad sexual, étnica o cultural. Simplemente cura las heridas de los necesitados y se siente rendido por la sociedad actual. Casi al final del filme, Camazotz busca que alguien le ayude a escapar de este tiempo y de este lugar. Ya depende de uno o de una de los personajes ayudarle a transcender.

Raúl Dorantes, inmigrante mexicano, ha escrito más de 15 obras en español, casi todas ambientadas en Chicago y con un protagonista inmigrante. El grupo de teatro y cine “Colectivo El Pozo” con mucho esfuerzo y energía  ha producido le obra de Dorantes. Raúl también es profesor de NEIU, escritor y activista cultural. Él, como Camazotz, busca la cura a través del arte, la comunidad y la conversación.

Camazotz tells the story of the Meso-American bat god who lived in Chicago as an undocumented immigrant for a year. He meets an anthropologist from the Newberry Library, another immigrant working as a chef in a downtown restaurant and a Mexican-American teenager living in the suburbs.  Camazotz witness the city violence during his stay in Chicago. Due to there being so much blood spilled, he does not need to bite to feed himself. He, rather, cleans the wounds of the victimized. It eventually becomes clear that Camazotz has healing powers. All those who come in contact with Camazotz are impacted by the god’s presence. After nearly a year in Chicago, Camazotz is arrested and deported but never makes it to the border. Camazotz escapes and ends up in small town Arkansas working in chicken packing plant. Throughout the film the reporter Robert Rizzo interviews all that met and knew Camazotz.

 Camazotz propels us to reflect on the violence in the city and within ourselves as well as about the need and ways to heal. Camazotz is not limited by a sexual, ethnic or cultural identity. He simply heals the wounds of the neediest and those who most abandoned by society. At nearly the end of the film, Camazotz looks for someone to help leave this present time and place.  It will depend on one of the characters to help Camazotz transcend.

 Raúl Dorantes, a Mexican immigrant himself, has written over 15 plays in Spanish, with almost all taking place in Chicago and with an immigrant protagonist. The Spanish theatre and film group Colectivo El Pozo has in a collective effort and energy produced Dorantes’ work. Raúl is also a professor at NEIU, writer and cultural activist.  He, like Camazotz, seeks to heal through art, community and conversation.
