IL Humanities Road Scholar Connie Martin will explore how certain lyrics and emotion within Negro Spirituals were used to inform freedom seekers when and how to escape from the bondage of slavery.
By defining Negro spirituals, seeing the origins, and following along as the songs play, you may understand certain songs' meanings as well as interpretations to why they were used on plantations of the South.
Hearing the songs will allow us to have a better understanding of the intelligent planning of enslaved African Americans and abolitionists both Black and White to assist freedom seekers to get to Canada.
Connie Martin is an Illinois Humanities Road Scholar Speaker. Walk-ins are welcome as space allows.
