Eola Road Branch
Before Thanksgiving this year, learn from Illinois Humanities Road Scholar, Gerald Savage, as he presents a brief history of the reintroduction of Native Americans into Illinois.
Gerald’s formal, native name is Ho-Chunk Ska Ga (White Winnebago), and he is a tribal elder with the Ho-Chunk Nation and a low-level Bear Clan Chief. He will discuss the reintroduction of his family into Illinois, tribal customs and ways, the history of the tribe, modern natives, naming ceremonies, stereotypes, environmental concerns, tribal settlements and reservations, and more.
Gerald’s grandparents were Chief Walks with the Wind and Princess Stands on a Cloud. They were very influential in teaching Gerald native customs and ways. This program is about history, past and present, from a Native perspective.
Gerald Savage is an Illinois Humanities Road Scholar.
